Wayne McGregor Movement Systems
Overview
Choreographic movement translated into kinetic type, sound, and spatial projection.
This collaborative project responded to Wayne McGregor's Undance and Tree of Codes, using Richard Serra's verb list as a bridge between bodily movement and typographic transformation.
My contributions included performance research, kinetic-type experiments, projection testing, spatial mockups, and musical accompaniment created from samples of the original performances.
System
Verbs became instructions for how letterforms could move.
To swirl, twist, disarrange, wave, dapple, chip, and scatter were tested as live parameters in Processing. The letterforms fragmented and reorganised in response to gesture.
Projection moved the work beyond the screen. Type crossed walls, floors, glass tables, and architectural corners, turning the studio itself into part of the composition.
The final films hold the system in motion; the projections let that motion occupy the room.
